Step 4:  Customize Monitoring

The Customize Monitoring section lists the metrics that are to be monitored for each segment of the service, the locations of end user groups, and who is to be notified when the value of a metric causes an alert. This information is specified in three sub-steps:

Metrics

This section opens displaying the most commonly requested metrics. You can click Add Metrics to display a full list of the metrics that can be monitored for each service segment.   more

Each metric is monitored by a metric policy that is specific to the service segment being monitored. A large number of service segments requires a large number of policies. Monitoring all possible metrics for all service segments requires many policies. This may impact the performance of NetProfiler and may also consume all the policies it is licensed to support. So it is recommended that you consider which metrics you need to monitor before enabling additional metrics.

When you have selected the metrics you want to monitor for each service segment, click Save & Next to move on to specifying service locations.

Locations

The metrics monitored for end-user segments are automatically broken out by locations. By default, all user locations are monitored individually for each end-user segment. This requires a metric policy for each. Note that you can reduce the number of policies your system uses by reducing the number of locations you monitor for a segment.

If the locations available are not the ones you need, please contact your NetProfiler administrator to modify the location definitions.   more

To select individual locations to monitor, use the Selected option and Control-click to select multiple locations from the list.

Click Save & Next to move on to selecting notifications.

Notifications

NetProfiler can send email or SNMP notifications to people or automated systems when the health of a service segment enters a High or Low alert condition. The recipients of these notifications are specified on the Definitions > Notifications page.   more

You can select which service segments are to generate alert notifications. If a segment is not selected, the alerts are still listed on the dashboard and in the event list. However, notifications are not sent out in email or SNMP traps.

After you have selected who should be notified for each level of alert for each segment, click Save & Next to move to Step 5:  Commit Changes to Service.
