Managing services
NetProfiler appliance enables you to monitor the performance of services that your network provides to end users. A service can be an application, for example Microsoft Exchange, Oracle or SAP, or it can be a combination of applications integrated through custom software. NetProfiler monitors the entire application delivery path of each service.
For services provided by multi-tiered applications, you can identify a series of service segments along the application delivery paths. This allows you to monitor performance and identify problems with greater resolution. You can receive an alert and run a report on any segment of the service to isolate a problem to a particular application, server, or link.
A service segment is defined by its components and the applications and ports in use between them. Service segments are displayed on a service map and can be right-clicked for reporting options.
The Definitions > Services page displays the name, description and status of existing services, and the number of policies used by each service. It also includes the following options for managing services:
-
New - Click New to open a page on which you can define a new service. For examples of defining services, click Watch Tutorials. more
-
Settings - Click Settings to open a page on which those with Administrator accounts can specify which service performance metrics are included by default when new services are defined. more
-
Actions - The Actions column provides a drop down list of actions you can take on each service listed on the page. The actions include:
-
-
Edit - displays a service map and lists of components and segments for the service. You can edit the definition of the service.
-
View - displays a read-only view of the service definition.
-
Disable or Enable - disables or enables all the policies that are monitoring the service. This prevents alerts from triggering because of policy violations.
-
View Health - Runs a Service Incident Report, which displays the health of the service.
-
View Performance - Runs a Service Performance Report.
-
Tune - Opens a page on which you can tune all performance metric policies for the service. more
-
Revert - If a service definition is in the process of being edited, and edit icon is displayed in the status column and the Actions list for the service includes the Revert option. Choose this option to delete the edits and restore the service to the definition that was in effect before the editing.
-
Delete - Deletes the service definition.
-
Most of the Actions options are also available by right-clicking the name of the service.
-
Policies Usage - indicates how many policies have been created. Each metric that is monitored for each service requires a policy. The more services you have and the more metrics you monitor for each, the more policies you consume.
