Hardware and Software Dependencies
The following table summarizes the hardware and software requirements for RiOS.
SteelHead
Hardware and Software Requirements
SteelHead
19-inch (483 mm) two-post or four-post rack. (CX255, CX555, CX570, CX755, CX770, 150, 250, and 550 appliances do not require a rack.)
SteelHead Management Console
Any computer that supports a Web browser with a color image display.
The Management Console has been tested with all versions of Chrome, Mozilla Firefox Extended Support Release version 38, and Microsoft Internet Explorer 11.
Note: Javascript and cookies must be enabled in your Web browser.
SteelCentral Controller for SteelHead Mobile
Hardware and Software Requirements
Mobile Controller
19-inch (483 mm) two-post or four-post rack.
Mobile Controller Console
Any computer that supports a Web browser with a color image display.
The SteelCentral Controller for SteelHead Mobile has been tested with Mozilla Firefox Extended Support Release version 38, and Microsoft Internet Explorer 11.
Note: JavaScript and cookies must be enabled in your Web browser.
Note: If you want to encrypt your communication, you must have an SSL-capable browser.
No specific operating system is required.
SteelHead Mobile
•  Operating Systems - Mobile Controller v4.5.1 and later supports:
–  Windows 8.1 (32-bit and 64-bit versions) and Windows Server 2012.
–  Windows 8.1 (32-bit and 64-bit versions), and Windows Server 2008, Windows 8 (32-bit and 64-bit versions), Windows XP (32-bit versions only), and Vista and Windows 7 (32-bit and 64-bit versions).
–  macOS 10.12 Sierra, Mac OS X 10.11, 10.10, 10.9, Mac OS X v10.8 (Intel only), v10.7, v10.6.
•  CPU - Celeron, 650 MHz, 256 MB of RAM.
•  Memory - At least 256 MB of disk space for the data store.
Important: Carefully consider the data store size for your SteelHead Mobile clients. Changing the data store size later requires clearing the data store, which temporarily slows performance.
•  SteelHead - At least one SteelHead is required, running RiOS v4.x or higher.
•  Mobile Controller - Either the physical appliance or the Virtual Steelhead Mobile Controller for RSP (Mobile Controller-v).
•  Concurrent Clients Supported per Mobile Controller - 4000 for the physical appliance or 100 for Mobile Controller-v.
•  VPN Compatibility - For detailed VPN specifications, see the SteelCentral Controller for SteelHead Mobile User’s Guide or https://supportkb.riverbed.com/support/index?page=content&id=S14999.
•  Wireless PC Card Compatibility - Many major vendors, including Verizon, Sprint, and AT&T. This is a partial listing. Wireless PC Card compatibility might be affected by hardware and driver versions, bundled software, and other factors.
If you are enforcing outbound security, your firewall must allow the following client application components:
•  For Windows - rbtdebug.exe, rbtmon.exe, shmobile.exe, and rbtsport.exe
•  For Mac OS X - rbtdebug, rbtmond, rbtsport, and rbtuseragentd
The Windows Mobile Client software must be installed on a NTFS file system. Mobile Controller does not support installation on a FAT or FAT32 file system.
Administrator privileges are required to install SteelHead Mobile software. Limited or standard user privileges are required to run or upgrade the software.
You can have no more than one SteelHead Mobile software installation per endpoint. Fast user switching is also not supported.
Ensure that the VPN tunnel is not optimized. If the VPN tunnel uses TCP for transport, when you configure the acceleration policy, add a pass-through rule for the VPN port number connected to by the client. Depending on your deployment scenario, this rule might be the first rule in the in-path list.
VPNs that use IPSec as the transport protocol do not need a pass-through rule. IPSec is its own non-TCP/IP protocol and, by default, the SteelHeads do not optimize it.
