Performance and Availability policies

Performance and availability policies are defined on the Definitions > Policies page Performance and Availability tab.

The NetProfiler provides analytics for implementing the following types of performance and availability policies:

  • Application Availability - Application Availability policies monitor the number of clients using specified applications and the average amount of traffic. They detect abnormal decreases, which could indicate decreased availability.

  • Application Performance - Application Performance policies monitor the average response time experienced by users of applications. They also monitor the number of connections to the applications and the number of TCP Resets and TCP Retransmissions. A decrease in connections or increases in response times, resets, or retransmissions could indicate application performance problems.

  • Link Congestion - Link Congestion policies monitor traffic on a specified interface for abnormal increases in inbound or outbound bandwidth consumption. They also monitor for increases in inbound or outbound traffic that exceed a specified interface utilization level. Abnormal increases in bandwidth consumption or interface utilization could indicate congestion on the link.

  • Link Outage - Link Outage policies monitor traffic on a specified interface for abnormal decreases in inbound or outbound bandwidth consumption. They also monitor for decreases in inbound or outbound traffic that drop below a specified interface utilization level. Abnormal decreases in bandwidth consumption or interface utilization could indicate an outage on the link.

You can define many policies of each type, depending on your license. Each policy specifies a set of traffic to which it applies, a set of metrics (bytes per second, number of clients per second, etc.) to be monitored, and a set of parameters within which operation is considered to be acceptable. You can adjust the tolerance of the policy to changes in network behavior.

Alerting and Notification

Each policy includes a specification for the level of alert (High or Low) that is to be generated if a policy violation occurs. It also specifies who is to be notified for each level of alert.
