Typical licensing work flows
Note: These licensing workflows apply to physical appliances only. Virtual and cloud appliances use a difference workflow.
A typical licensing process involves an IT administrator, that prepares and installs the product and retrieves the serial number , and a network administrator, who generates the product license keys.
The installer:
-
Mounts, cables and configures this appliance and the other Riverbed appliances that were ordered with it.
-
Records the product serial number from the chassis of each appliance. The number identified as "SN" is the product serial number.
-
Sends the serial number for each appliance, along with their locations on the network, to the network manager.
Then the network manager:
-
Logs in to the Riverbed licensing web site.
-
Enters the product serial number of the first Riverbed appliance to gain access to the licensing page. The Riverbed licensing page lists the serial numbers of all Riverbed appliances that were included in the same purchase order.
-
For each serial number, activates the licenses that apply to that serial number.
After the licenses have been activated on the Riverbed licensing web site, the license keys can be added to the NetProfiler either automatically or manually.
Riverbed appliances that have access to Internet automatically download the license keys that were assigned to their serial numbers on the licensing web site.
Note: If you configured the appliance to be accessible on the network and if it has access to the Internet, then it automatically downloads its license keys when you click Configure Now on the initial Setup page. If you select the Enable automatic license download from Riverbed option, the appliance checks for any additional licenses once per day.
If the NetProfiler does not have access to the Internet, you must enter the license keys manually. You must copy and paste the keys into the NetProfiler licensing page. Once you have the keys, you paste them into the Licenses page.
