Browse Preferred Interfaces page

You can designate device interfaces that are sending traffic information to NetProfiler as "preferred interfaces."

Traffic statistics for preferred interfaces are precomputed and cached for quick access (except when a VXLAN license is enabled).

The Browse Preferred Interfaces page displays statistics for preferred interfaces, devices or interface groups, in order of traffic volume.

Preferred interfaces are listed and also graphed. Expand each entry in the table to display statistics for the following categories of information displayed on the preferred interfaces:

  • Applications with Ports

  • Host Pairs with Ports

  • DSCP values

Expend each of these categories to display the top members of the category. Click "+" to expand an entry and "-" to collapse it. Left-click any entry to run a traffic report on that entry. Right-click any entry to display a menu of reports available for you to run for the entry.

The graph displays the values for the entry selected in the table. Left-click a plot on the graph to run a traffic report on it. Right-click it to display a menu of reports available to be run for the selection. Use the graph menu to edit the display settings or to export the data to a file in CSV format.

Filtering

Expand the Filters section of the page to limit the displays to a particular time frame or selected preferred interfaces. The Filters section enables you to:

  • Specify the DNS name or IP address of a device and the name of the preferred interfaces or interface groups, on that device.

  • Browse for preferred interfaces. Click Browse to open the Look Up Interface tool. Enter the name of the device or the IP address and click Search to find preferred interfaces that match the search criteria. Select "Search all" or "Search within" options and click Search. Select the preferred interfaces or group from the search results and click OK.

  • Report inbound statistics and outbound statistics separately by selecting the Split Inbound/Outbound checkbox.

  • Show the average, total or peak values of the metric for the specified time frame.

  • Specify the number of rows displayed. This controls both the number of interfaces listed and the number of statistics listed in each category in the expanded view.

Click Apply in the lower right corner of the Filters section to filter the table and graph displays.

Control which interfaces are preferred interfaces

The first time NetProfiler 10.9.0 or higher is started after you install the product, the first 100 discovered interfaces are selected as preferred interfaces. NetProfiler displays statistics for the preferred interfaces on the Preferred Interfaces page in order of traffic volumes.

The initial selections remain in effect until you change them on the Definitions > Interface Groups page.

If you defined preferred interfaces on the Administration > Devices/Interfaces page Preferred Interfaces (List) tab of a version before 10.11, those definitions are automatically moved to the Definitions > Interface Groups page when you update to version 10.11. They are grouped in the Preferred Interfaces network view.

You can add or remove preferred interfaces from the Preferred Interfaces network view.   more

If you have updated from a version earlier than version 10.9.0, or if the appliance is receiving traffic information but no interfaces are listed on the Browse Preferred Interfaces page, verify that storage space for Preferred Interfaces data was specified on the Administration > Flow Log page Disk Allocation tab.   more

After the storage space has been allocated, add the interfaces to the Preferred Interfaces network view on the Definitions > Interface Groups page to have them reported on the Reports > Browse Preferred Interfaces page.
